Barry
Green Biography
Barry Green, a native Californian, served as Principal Bassist of the Cincinnati
Symphony for 28 years and Professor of Bass at the University of Cincinnati
College-Conservatory of Music. As former Executive Director of the International Society
of Bassists, he is currently directing a young bassist outreach program for the San
Francisco Symphony Education Department, teaches privately at Stanley Intermediate School
in Lafayette and at the University of California at Santa Cruz and has organized the
Northern California Bass Club. He is currently Principal Bassist with the California
Symphony, the Sun Valley Summer Symphony and active as a bass soloist and teacher. Green
has presented concerts and clinics for young audiences in schools in the Bay Area and
throughout the world.
He is the leader (with co-leader and jazz bass soloist Pat Klobas) of the Bay
Bass Band, a unique cross-over contemporary ensemble of five classical and jazz
bassist with percussion. The Bay Bass Band, currently in its fourth year of existence, has
commissioned over 15 works for the ensemble in a wide range of popular and modern styles
including pieces by John Pattitucci, Jimmy Haslip, Bertram Turetzky, Michael Marring,
Randy Tico, Tony Osborne, Edward Williams and others.
Green's solo recordings include The Baroque Bass, The Romantic Bass, Contemporary
Music for the Double Bass, The Sound of the Bass, Bass Evolution and the most recent
CD, "Ole-Cool" with Cincinnati pianist-arranger James Hart,
percussionist-son Adam Green plus the Spanish Quartet de Barcelone. He is
working on three new CD projects of contemporary jazz/classic repertoire. He has
frequently appeared as concerto soloist with the Cincinnati Symphony and other
professional orchestras performing popular and original contemporary works.
Green has studied with Francois Rabbath for several years and is very active
coordinating many of Rabbath's Institute courses in America. He is also author of The
Inner Game of Music, plus seven Inner Game Workbooks and a video with W.
Timothy Gallwey. The Inner Game of Music deals with musicians
reaching their potential in performance and learning.
Green recently authored a unique series of books, The Popular Bass Method, (in five
volumes) with local jazz bassist Jeff Neighbor. Using classical and popular music in duet
forms, exercises and songs to teach technique and music. The books are available through A
